Quite a plain toybox this one, unlike some of our cartoon toyboxes, and as such may be more suitable for maintaining a more sophisticated look in your home. Quite a sturdy pine construction with this one so should cope well with the rough and tumble your kids will no doubt put it through.

This toybox features that favourite of many young girls at the moment one Peppa Pig. Peppa Pig is unsuprisingly a pig, she has a younger brother who she spends her time bossing about. Compared to “In the night garden” this is highbrow stuff.

Anyway if your little one loves Peppa Pig and you want to get them to tidy up their toys more often than this could be the toybox for you. It is only mdf so the build quality is not up there with the other toy boxes we have featured, however this is reflected in the price (currently £37.50).

In the unlikely event you have not seen this show yet let me explain, In the Night Garden is the 21st century equivalent of the magic roundabout, and by that I mean the story lines give the impression that the writers of this show have been participating in some non-prescription drugs.

Upsy Daisy is one of the characters in this show, she is a girl who goes around the garden with her bed (her bed literally follows her in some motorised way). She likes to kiss the male characters and then show them her pop up skirt. Personally I do not see Upsy Daisy as being a great role model in this modern era of equal rights for females, but then that’s just my opinion

The front of the toy box features Upsy Daisy along with a floral design. The height and shape of the toybox means it also doulbes nicely as a stool for your little one to site on while they play.

This is a bargain fabric toybox great for a bit of extra storage. The toy story design will not doubt appeal to your little ones and hopefully can even encourage them to put away their toys themselves.

• 6. Zhu Zhu Pets

  Virtual pets are nothing new, back in the 90s we had the Tamogochi and Furbies, this year’s equivalent is Zhu Zhu pets. These are small motorised bets that move about bumbing into this and making “cute” noises. On their own they seem pretty unoriginal, however they come with accessories that the Zhu Zhu pets interact with.

5. Solid Construction.

Lets face it anything put in a child’s bedroom or play room is going to face a lifetime of physical abuse as it gets bashed and climbed on. Some cheaper storage boxes made of thin plastic could be liable to break leaving sharp edges. A sturdy solid wood toybox should be able to last a lifetime of abuse from even the most boisterous child

4. Avoid plastic linings.

I have seen on the market wicker storage baskets which at first glance may look ideal for toy storage, however on closer inspection such baskets have had a a loose thin plastic sheet lining on the inside (similar to a carrier bag). Such linings could run the risk of being choking hazards.

3. Suitable Toxin free paints

With wooden toy boxes especially the paint can chip with age and use and you never know what your kid will put in their mouth next

so it is always reasurring to now the paint used is non toxic. This is a legal requirement on items sold in the UK so you should be safe provided your buying from a UK retailer.

2. Air holes / Cut outs

Pretty much every child around the world has played hide and seek in some form. Large toy boxes can be sizeable enough to make the perfect hiding place for smaller children who will no doubt be tempting to get inside. In the unlikely event that the child was to become stuck inside air holes will prevent against any change of suffication. Many toy boxes include cut out slots just under the lid which provide a more than adequate airflow.

1. Safety-Catch / Slow Closer

Solid wood toyboxes can have heavy lids, without a saftey catch or slow closer device such lids could easily lead to trapped fingers as the lid falls on your little one’s pinkies.
